R2R Day 3 – St Brieuc to Cancale

While I had set my alarm, I actually got woken by the local cockerel a lot earlier. Breakfast was at 7:30am and I was away by 8:30am (it’s difficult to know where the time goes). The first 2 miles were all downhill (including a 1 in 7) back to the impressive motorway bridge spanning the River Gouet.

After that I followed the coast more closely, passing through many pretty towns with stops at Dahouet Port and Erqy.

After 30 miles by noon, I had an early homemade lunch from Carrefour then cracked on in the afternoon. My route was a combination of EV4, with diversions off to points of interest, secondary roads to avoid ‘off-road’ sections or the invaluable Google Maps for when I was lost. This provided a variety of scenery and more impressive bridges.

During the day I had noticed some town signs had been turned upside down. Google tells me that, “They are accompanied by the slogan ‘Nous marchons sur la tête’ (we’re walking on our heads) to signal a world turned upside down or a policy that makes no sense. The reason for these strange happenings? It’s a protest, largely orchestrated by the farming union that represents young agriculture workers.”

I arrived at Cancale YH at the bottom of a long hill, 2 miles out of town, @6:45pm blown away by the view over to Mont St Michel in the far distance.

Unfortunately there was limited choice for dinner; either the YH emergency pizza, or a local food wagon and grill, serving french delicacies. After 85 miles, I was hoping for something more substantial, but as the food wagon was recommended, I opted for ‘une petite planche de charcuterie et fromage‘, as per the photo below, which has probably sent my cholesterol off the scale, but sometimes needs must.
