R2R Day 1 – Roscoff to Trebeurden

As usual I got woken by the ship’s soothing alarm music at 7am (6am), advising that we about to dock in Roscoff. Had a bit of breakfast, packed up, scanned the cabin to make sure that I had everything and then made my way down to the car deck. Luckily I got off and through immigration fairly quickly and headed into Roscoff, to mark the start of the trip at the Lighthouse, kilometre zero (I wasn’t expecting this which was the only cumulative distance marker that I saw all day).

Roscoff is a wonderful ancient port, at its best in the early morning sun.

Day 1 navigation is always tricky, getting used to the signs, their frequency and accuracy and how often to check with Google maps on my phone. However I soon got confidence and was rewarded with some wonderful scenery on quiet but undulating roads and cycle tracks. There were also a few woodland and gravel trails, but nothing too long or rugged that couldn’t be managed on my excellent Schwalbe tyres (from 2023).

All was good until my wandering mind wondered about my USB charger and the dawning that I had left it plugged in the cabin on the ferry. Obviously there could be worse things to leave behind, but not many. And how ironic my French charging setup didn’t even make it on to French soil. Maybe Morlaix (which fittingly reminded me of the late Moray who was remembered at BWp today), a town famous for its railway bridge, would be the first opportunity to buy one.

Leaving Molaix, without a charger, the route started following the coast with more great scenery, white sandy beaches and deep blue sea that I wasn’t really expecting.

The undulating roads were now getter steeper (or I was getting more tired) especially from Lannion (or Lannuon in Breton) to Trebeurden YH where I arrived @ 5:30 with 75 miles completed. My hopes that it was a modern refurbished Auberge de Jeunesse with built in USBs by each bed were quickly dashed but I was able to borrow a charger from the staff to get me up to 90%.

After discussing my predicament with others I may have a plan, or this blog may be more irregular…. Nothing like a bit of stress on holiday ! Maybe I should have a plan to be less absent-minded.
